In the two weeks before Lent, Venice slips into its most theatrical self. Carnevale fills the misty canals and squares with elaborate masks, sweeping period costumes and candlelit masquerade balls — a centuries-old tradition reborn.
The scene
The masked promenade on St. Mark's Square, the flight-of-the-angel opening ceremony, and quiet, atmospheric back-canals that feel straight out of a painting.
Good to know
February Venice is cold and can flood (acqua alta) — pack warm layers and waterproof shoes. Rent a mask for a day, and book any grand ball well ahead.
