How to Plan a Trip That Actually Fits Your Budget

A great trip and a blown budget aren't the same thing. A little planning up front keeps the holiday fun and the bill calm.
Start with the number
Decide the total you're comfortable spending before you fall in love with a destination.
The big three
Flights, stays and activities eat most of the budget. Book flights early, be flexible on dates, and mix a splurge stay with simpler nights.
Track as you go
Log spends as they happen rather than reconciling at the end. (Yatrikk's Budget tab does this per trip, split across travellers.) Set aside 10–15% for the unplanned — the best travel memories are often the unbudgeted ones.
