When to Visit India: A Season-by-Season Travel Guide
India · 25 July 2026

India is a whole subcontinent, so "the best time to visit" depends entirely on where you're going. Here's a simple season-by-season guide to get the timing right.
Winter (October–March) — the sweet spot
The best all-round window. Cool, dry and comfortable across most of the country — ideal for Rajasthan's forts, Kerala's backwaters, Goa's beaches, wildlife safaris and the Golden Triangle. This is peak season, so book ahead.
Summer (April–June) — head for the hills
The plains get very hot, so this is the time for the mountains: Ladakh and Spiti open up, and Himachal, Uttarakhand and Kashmir are at their greenest.
Monsoon (July–September) — atmospheric and green
Rain transforms parts of India into their most beautiful selves: Kerala and the Western Ghats turn lush, Meghalaya thunders with waterfalls, and the high desert of Ladakh stays dry and accessible. Coastal beach time is best avoided.
Quick region-by-region timing
- Rajasthan & North India: October–March
- Kerala & South India: October–March (or monsoon for green hills)
- Goa & the beaches: November–March
- Ladakh & Spiti: June–September
- Kashmir: April–May (blossoms) or December–February (snow)
- Northeast India: October–April
