Kerala Backwaters: A First-Timer's Guide to Houseboats, Hills and Beaches
Kerala, India · 25 July 2026

"God's Own Country" earns the nickname. In a single compact trip you can drift through palm-fringed backwaters, wake up in misty tea hills and end on a quiet beach. Here's how to do Kerala for the first time.
The backwaters
The heart of any Kerala trip. Board a houseboat in Alleppey (Alappuzha) or the quieter Kumarakom and spend a night gliding past rice paddies, village churches and fishermen. One night aboard is plenty for most travellers.
Munnar's tea hills
Three hours inland, the Western Ghats rise into endless emerald tea terraces. Cool weather, viewpoints and spice plantations — a lovely 1–2 day contrast to the coast.
Fort Kochi
A walkable old town of Chinese fishing nets, colonial streets, cafés and art. Perfect for arrival or departure days.
Beaches
Finish at Varkala's cliff beach or the sleepy sands of Marari.
Best time & how many days
Visit October–March for the driest weather (or the monsoon for lush, cheaper hills). Five to seven days covers backwaters + Munnar + Kochi comfortably.
Tips
- Book houseboats a few weeks ahead in peak season.
- Pack light cottons plus one warm layer for Munnar.
