Himalayan Trips in India: The Best Mountain Destinations and When to Visit
Himalayas, India · 25 July 2026

The Indian Himalaya isn't one place — it's a dozen very different mountain worlds, from cold high-altitude desert to green pine valleys. Here's how to choose the right one and when to go.
The regions at a glance
- Ladakh — high-altitude desert, turquoise lakes (Pangong), monasteries and the world's highest passes. Big, dramatic, remote.
- Spiti — Ladakh's quieter cousin: ancient villages, whitewashed monasteries, fewer crowds.
- Himachal (Manali, Shimla, Kasol) — the most accessible hills, good for a first mountain trip.
- Kashmir — Dal Lake houseboats, meadows like Gulmarg and Sonamarg, and spring blossoms.
- Uttarakhand — pilgrim towns, Rishikesh, and gateway treks.
- Sikkim & the Northeast — Kanchenjunga views, Yumthang's flowers, and true offbeat calm.
Best time to visit
- Ladakh & Spiti: June–September (passes open, roads clear).
- Kashmir: April–May for blossoms, or December–February for snow.
- Himachal & Uttarakhand: March–June and September–November; monsoon (July–Aug) brings landslides.
How many days
Give Ladakh 6–8 days (you need 2 to acclimatise). Himachal or Kashmir work well in 4–6 days.
Altitude & practical tips
- Ascend slowly and hydrate — acclimatisation prevents altitude sickness.
- Carry layers; mountain weather turns fast.
- Download offline maps — signal is patchy.
